The English as a Second or Other Language (ESL) Department is dedicated to improving our student’s English language skills as well as assisting them on their journey towards academic excellence here at John Bapst and beyond. We currently offer semester-long English language courses at the intermediate and advanced level as well as a TOEFL Preparation course offered for seniors.
Every class is designed to improve student’s English across all four skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Students can expect to gain valuable academic vocabulary, learn and master English grammar to improve writing and editing skills, improve listening comprehension and note-taking strategies, and further bolster their reading comprehension skills. Presentations and written assignments are frequently assigned to improve fluency and accuracy.
In addition to the class itself, ESL students are offered individualized support to succeed in their other courses and academic assignments. Guided TOEFL test practice sessions are also offered after school several times a year to ESL students.
