BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)– 20 years ago thousands turned out at Bangor International Airport to greet the troops returning from Persian Gulf War. Wednesday, the John Bapst Band joined the troop greeters and invited a special guest from that first flight.
Sgt. Kevin Tillman returned to play with the band. Tillman and other members of the 82nd Airborne returned home from Iraq in 1991 at the first troop greeting and on that day he picked up a saxophone and played the National anthem. Tillman says when he was asked to come back to Bangor to thank the troop greeters and remember that day he said, yes.
Tillman says, “The greatness of the troop greeters and what they do for everybody, that hasn’t changed. That’s what I told the John Bapst students. You are being raised in greatness and you don’t even know. For the last 20 years this has been happening. You don’t know a life with out troop greeters there at every hour of the day.”
Tillman was also the guest of honor Wednesday evening at a reception at John Bapst High School.
