Good Afternoon,I hope this finds you all well. Can you believe it? IT’S TIME FOR SPRING SPORTS! We are excited to say “spring” not just because we are excited for the weather to get better (we are), but because we have worked hard to establish guidelines, follow protocols, and to get “back” to this point…back to spring sports! We will still need to be masked, there are still guidelines that need to be followed, we will still need to distance when we can, and we will still need to be screened each day. The difference is we will compete in the spring sports we enjoy and that is simply exciting!Arm conditioning (formerly known as “Pitchers and Catchers”) for Baseball and Softball will begin on 3/22. The workouts are by invitation, and coaches have let the players invited know already. The schedule for those sessions is attached. Tryouts, workouts, and practices for Lacrosse and Tennis will begin on Monday, 3/29. As of today, Outdoor Track is up in the air with regard to start date. If we can secure an outdoor workout space for next week, we will. However, this year, our home will be Hampden Academy, and that track will not be ready for workouts until 4/5. We will keep you posted there. If you are interested in a sport please sign up. The sign up sheet (a google doc) was sent out last week. Check your school email. Sign up for the sport in which you are interested, and make sure you hit “share.” To have a clear understanding of the numbers interested in each sport will help us plan properly. Thanks for taking care of signing up.In order to participate, paperwork will need to be returned by Monday, 3/29 (to Coach O). Those forms include our COVID-19 Assumption of Risk Document, Parent Consent forms, our Student-Athlete Contract, along with our Proof of Physical form. Those forms are attached to this email. Our student-athletes should turn these in, digitally or otherwise, to the Athletic Director. Please drop them by my office or ask the folks in the main office to “put them in my mailbox.” A daily screening form, like the one you turn in at school each day, will need to be turned in to your coaches at each workout. You will not be able to workout without it. Finally, sports fees ($300) will be assessed for those of you that only play a spring sport. If you played a sport in the fall or winter, and you paid your fee already, you are all set. Let us know if you have questions on the fee.You will receive follow-up communications this weekend from your coaches. They may provide you with details about your first workouts, and procedures and protocols they will ask you to follow this year. As a reminder, face coverings are required for all athletes and coaches, at all times, in all activities. Please plan accordingly.
Once we get through the first couple of days, and get established, we will be scheduling player/parent/coach zoom meetings. These will serve as our annual meetings, normally held in person at school where we review policy and philosophy. Please stay tuned for times and dates for these meetings.
We have a very respectful, long-standing relationship with John T. Cyr Bus Company. Unfortunately, due to a driver shortage, Cyr will not be able to provide us with buses before 4pm. Due to facility issues beyond our control, some sports will need to practice, both on and off-campus, and before 4pm. We will need to count on parents and families to help get our student-athletes to their practices and games in some cases. Any scheduled transportation will appear on the schedule. Coaches will work with players and families to help arrange transportation as needed. We thank you, in advance, for your help here.
Finally, it is important to have the proper perspective heading into this spring. We all want our student-athletes to have a great experience. We want them to improve in their sport, we want them to have fun, and we want them to compete. However, this spring season will require patience. It will require understanding. It will require strict adherence to procedures and protocols. We will do everything we can to provide the safest and most fulfilling experience possible.
Thank you for all your support, and I wish all of our Spring Sports Student-Athletes nothing but the best of luck next week and beyond!
