John Bapst Memorial High School conferred 122 diplomas on its graduating seniors Sunday afternoon, June 5, as it said farewell to the Class of 2016. Jayley Charley Handley, daughter of Jodi and Charles Handley of Fairfield, delivered the Senior Welcome and Joshua Frederick Morneault, son of Stacey and Rodney ’79 Morneault of Orrington, delivered the Senior Farewell. The commencement speaker was Charles E. Hewett, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Jackson Laboratory, offering a theme of becoming oneself, encouraging all to live boldly, and learning from both successes and failures.
Among the many awards and honors presented to the outgoing class, top honors went to class valedictorian Isaac Webb and class salutatorian Lantian (Sky) Xu, who accepted their awards and invited fellow graduates to embrace the “now”, never stop learning, and appreciate the value of thinking independently.
Isaac Webb, son of Doris and William Webb of Blue Hill, will attend Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall. Through NROTC, Isaac plans to join the Navy as an officer and major in electrical engineering.
