John Bapst Memorial High School is proud to announce the graduates of the Class of 2013 who marched on Sunday, June 2, 2013.
Donald Joseph (DJ) Brooks, son of Anne and Timothy Brooks of Clifton, was named valedictorian. He plans to attend Harvard University.
A high honor student, Brooks has won numerous academic awards during his four years at John Bapst. Brooks is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and is a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Scholar. He is a recipient of the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, Marine Corps League Good Citizenship Award, Phi Beta Kappa Academic Award, Maine Model United Nations Conference Diplomacy Award, and was the top scorer in the state for the Chemistry Olympiad. Brooks was captain of the Varsity Alpine Ski Team, was a member of the Sailing Team, Photography Club, and was a French tutor.
Brooks was awarded the WLBZ2 Teens Who Care Award for his philanthropic work both in and out of the John Bapst community including his efforts as director of the Peace, Water, and Wisdom Race Series to benefit the BARKA foundation. Brooks served as president of the Student Environmental Action Committee and National Honor Society, treasurer of the Student Senate and the Global Initiatives Club, was an active member of Key Club, Model United Nations, and Boy Scouts, where he earned the Eagle Scout Award.
Adrienne Carmack, daughter of Adrienne and David Carmack of Veazie, was named salutatorian. She plans to attend the University of Notre Dame.
A high honor student and AP Scholar with Distinction, Carmack was the John Bapst winner of the Maine Principals Association Award for academic excellence and good citizenship. Carmack has served John Bapst as a student ambassador and as Student Senate President.
Carmack has been the recipient of a National Merit Scholarship, US Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, Dartmouth Book Award, and was a US Presidential Scholars Candidate, in addition to numerous other academic recognitions. Active in many school activities, Carmack also served as secretary of the Student Environmental Action Committee, was a member of Key Club, Model United Nations, Tea Club, Photo Club, and Spanish Club.
Carmack was chosen as captain of the Varsity Cross Country Team, Runner of the Year, and was named to the PVC All-Conference First Team. She has also been a member of the Varsity Outdoor Track, Indoor Track, and Swim teams. She was named as a $5,000 Maine Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship recipient and was the recipient of a US Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award.
Carmack has been an avid community volunteer during her time at John Bapst, as a Bangor Public Library Children’s Volunteer, running the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure, picking up trash, cooking at the Ronald McDonald House, serving in Catholic Youth Ministry and the St. Paul Youth Leadership Team. Most recently, as a “fairy godmother” volunteer, Carmack recently led a drive to collect prom dresses to be given to the Cinderella Project of Maine Dress Giveaway. Carmack also found time to co-found Black Bear Baked Goods, for which she is a professional baker.
