About the film…
Having sold the family elephant, Mr. Tong has just arrived at the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) to work as a Mahout, or elephant keeper. Intrepid expats, tourists and Laotians converge in lush Lao jungle, once known as “The Land of a Million Elephants.” With less than 1,000 elephants remaining, the Lao elephant, along with the Mahout tradition, faces extinction within 30 years. A cultural and aesthetic immersion, Elephant Keeper provides a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of a Mahout in a rapidly evolving environment.
