The John Bapst Crusader JV hockey team capped off their undefeated season by taking first place in the annual Sukeforth JV Hockey Tournament, held February 20-22 at Sukee Arena in Winslow, Maine.
The John Bapst Crusader JV hockey team finished their season with an impressive 15-0-1 record, including two wins and a tie over Class A Bangor High JVs and seven shutouts. The John Bapst JV team is coached by Steve Cheff, with assistance from varsity coaches Gene Fadrigon, Tyler Fadrigon and Josh Lander.
In the first round of the tournament, the Class B Crusaders faced Class A Edward Little Red Eddies. The Crusaders prevailed with a 1-0 final score. The lone John Bapst goal was scored by Jacob Reese, with an assist by Mathew Spear. Dustin Averill handled the netminding duties for the Crusaders.
In their second game, John Bapst toppled Winslow with a final score of 9-0. Josiah Simko lead with two goals. Jonathan Cheff had a goal and three assists. Hunter Pate, Jackson Leonard, Le Spahr and Jacob Reese each had one goal and one assist. David Carmack and Mathew Spear each contributed a goal, while Joe DiStefano and Seth Yachanin each had one assist. Goaltender Sam Lander notched the shut out.
Next, John Bapst took on the Brewer Witches. The Crusaders scored nine goals while the Witches were held to just three. Jacob Reese was John Bapst’s top scorer with four goals and two assists. Mathew Spear had one goal and two assists. Hunter Pate, Josiah Simko and Jack Powell each had a goal and assist. Jonathan Cheff also contributed a goal, while Seth Yachanin had two assists. Sam Lander was in goal for the Crusaders.
The semi-final game had John Bapst facing the Lawrence Bulldogs. The Crusaders won, advancing to the tournament final, with a score of 6-2. Scoring for John Bapst were Seth Yachanin with two goals and one assist, Hunter Pate with one goal and one assist and Joe Archambault, David Carmack and Joe Distefano each scoring one goal. Matthew Spear had two assists while Eli Szydlo, Jack Powell, Jonathan Cheff and Lee Spahr recorded one assist apiece. Goaltending duties were shared by Dustin Averill and Sam Lander.
The championship game featured the John Bapst Crusaders and the Brewer Witches. John Bapst won the championship with a final score of 4-0. John Bapst goaltenders Dustin Averill and Sam Lander shared the shutout. Josiah Simko scored in the first period with an assist from Mathew Spear. The rest of the scoring came in the third period. David Carmack had one goal with a assist by Jack Powell. Seth Yachanin scored unassisted on a breakaway and Hunter Pate scored with an assist from Jonathan Cheff.
