HAMPDEN – Dr. Frederick George Jones Jr., 71, beloved husband, dad, pa, teacher, organist, choirmaster and author, passed away May 15, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Neptune Beach, Fla., the son of Goldie Johnston Jones and Frederick Jones. He was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Jones LaMee; and his parents. He leaves behind his sister, Pamela Jones Feuerherm; his loving wife, Judy; his children, Siri, Lisa, Jefferson and Stephanie; his grandchildren, Anna, Ashley and Sam; Uncle Bill; Aunty Elsa and Aunt Ruby; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He graduated cum laude from the University of the South, Sewanee, and received his doctorate in Old English from the University of Florida. He was first and foremost a teacher. He taught in the English department of State University of New York Binghamton and was a favorite teacher and mentor to hundreds of students at John Bapst Memorial High School for 29 years. He had hoped to finish his last quarter of teaching and then pursue other projects in his retirement. His other great passion was music. He served as an organist-choirmaster for 50 years, most recently at St. John’s Episcopal Church from 1981 to 2005. He loved to travel and led his choirs and groups of high school students on numerous tours of the British Isles and Ireland. He was a student of prehistory and archaeology, and author of “Chasing the Sun: A Journey in Neolithic Speculation.” A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 234 French St., Bangor.
