Rockland — The Oceanside girls basketball team tried to make history Tuesday night, but, despite battling back several times, could not dig out of an early hole and had trouble containing one tall, talented opponent and two other shorter perimeter sharpshooters.
No. 8 Oceanside (12-7) lost to No. 9 John Bapst of Bangor (10-9) 56-45 in Tuesday’s Eastern Class B prelim playoff game. The Mariners and Crusaders were battling for a spot in the regional tournament at the Bangor Auditorium, which, ironically, is where John Bapst plays its home games.
The home-standing Mariners came onto the court with a lot of energy and passion to take a 5-4 lead. However, from that point, John Bapst took control with 3-point field goals and the inside play of 6-foot-1-inch Abby Pyne.
In the span of a few days, the Mariners saw their fortunes take a turn for the worse. Oceanside, which ended the regular season winning 10 of its final 12 games to earn a home playoff contest, saw its inaugural season end with frustration and disappointment.
