Entry-Level Courses
Drawing
Students will learn and explore various drawing techniques and tricks for both beginners and experienced students. There is a focus on drawing from life using black and white media.
2-D Design
Students learn how to organize the Elements of Art through the use of the Principles of Design in their own original 2-D artworks. Materials covered include watercolor, pastels, and colored pencil.
Photography 1
Students learn about concepts related to framing, composition, lighting, and exposure. This course mainly focuses on cell phone photography and editing. It is helpful if students have their own devices for this course.
Sculpture & Ceramics
Students will explore the 3-D world using plaster, clay, found objects, and more. This course can be repeated for credit.
Digital Drawing/Painting
It is recommended that students have their own laptops for this class; we do have drawing tablets available for students to borrow.
Advanced Courses Requiring Prerequisite
Photography 2
Students will build on skills learned in Photography 1. This course will cover the technical aspects of working with DSLR cameras, including shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Studio lighting will also be introduced.
Acrylic Painting OR Watercolor Painting
Depending upon the course, students will learn the basics of the medium and various techniques in rendering. Students will be exposed to traditional and contemporary artists and works.
Printmaking
Students will explore traditional (relief and intaglio) as well as non-traditional and more contemporary forms of printmaking.
Illustration
Students will learn tools of the trade through writing and illustrating their own children’s picture book.
AP Studio Art
Students wishing to earn college credit can complete a portfolio in Drawing/Painting or 2-D Design. This class may be especially beneficial for those majoring in art, as students dedicate a year to a focused body of work.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities in Visual Art
Art Club
Open to all students, the Art Club meets weekly for consecutive sessions to create various art projects. Examples of recent projects include ceramic leaf wind chimes, wood burning plaques, stained glass paint projects, and Pysanky eggs.
