The recent induction ceremony of the National Honor Society left us with many inspiring memories. Thank you to guest speaker Dr. Adrienne Carmack who spoke about service to others and her work with foster children and current National Honor Society member Chuong (Peter) Dong, whose words we present below.
Today, we are being inducted into the National Honor Society, and this organization consists of four core values: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. The 70 students sitting on this stage have been chosen for these four characteristics. In some ways, we all have the same qualifications and potential, so it may be reasonable to assume that we are all alike.
Even though we are inducted into this prestigious organization through these same specific principles, each of us is entirely distinctive. William Shakespeare once wrote, “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” Not only are we completely different from one another in our talents at this point, but our futures will also be immensely divergent. It’s important to remember that being an individual means being an outsider, not a part of the herd. Being a member of the societal “herd” implies being a part of a group that worries too much about what society has to say. Yes, we are all different in personality and ability, but we tend to be pulled into being what others expect us to be. This induction ceremony is a step forward for the members of NHS to become who we truly want to be.
This recognition acts as a positive force to its members on this stage today, for these four values can teach us how to become constructive members of this society while still maintaining integrity, individualism, and independence.
I am very honored to be part of the National Honor Society, and I also hope you all are. I hope we can use this acknowledgment as the foundation to become unique individuals in this society who are not afraid to be different and stand up for what they believe.
