Activities
In order to address its diversity successfully--in order to meet its objective to recognize individual strengths, interests, and differences and to encourage their development--John Bapst Memorial High School offers a substantial program of co-curricular opportunities in addition to athletics and the arts. At John Bapst, the strong academic program is the common denominator; the arts and athletics programs embrace huge sections of the student population; but if all students are to find in themselves their potential for leadership, their capacity for service, their freedom of self expression--in short, the full dimensions of their character--both more and more varied opportunities must be made available to them.
Through Student Senate, students experience the rewards and the frustrations of democracy. Through Key Club and the National Honor Society they discover the satisfaction of giving of themselves. Tapping a little deeper into academics through offerings like the Math Team shows students that intellectual activity can be pursued for altruistic reasons, and the intellectual athletics of Chess bring many to appreciate more fully the value of analytical thinking.
Solo and Ensemble performances and stage productions offer performance opportunities that build, define, and test self confidence, and editing and assembling The Bapstonian (the yearbook) give students greater appreciation of the close and detailed work involved in producing a quality publication. In its Philosophy, John Bapst Memorial High School states that it believes that its mission to its students serves a wide range of needs and aspirations, that it not only prepares students for college but that it also provides students through the challenging work its curriculum requires and through its emphasis on growth with an excellent base from which they can successfully pursue whatever choices they make after graduation. Having substantial offerings across the board--in academics, in the arts, in athletics, and in activities, too--ultimately, is John Bapst simply keeping its promise to its students.
