FALL SPORTS MEETING AND PHYSICALS

The fall sports meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the auditorium. This meeting is mandatory for all 9th grade and transfer students who are interested in participating in fall athletics.

Organizational team meetings will be held in the rooms listed below at 7:30 pm and parents of all students are expected to attend.

Dr. Craig Curtis will be at John Bapst on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 from 8:00 am until noon to administer sports physicals to any interested student-athletes. The fee will be $30.00 and checks should be made payable to Dr. Craig Curtis. The Pre-Participation Physical Exam form must be completed and signed by a parent to give consent for the physical.

JOHN BAPST STUDENTS NAMED AP SCHOLARS

Bangor— Forty-five students at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams, according to the College Board

The Advanced Placement Program at John Bapst offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses and receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on AP exams. The school offers 13 AP courses in a wide variety of subject areas. In addition, a similar number of honors courses are offered. All students enrolled in an AP course at John Bapst are required to take the AP Exam. In 2009, 129 students took a total of 273 tests in 13 subject areas. Out of those 129 students, 45 have been named AP Scholars in recognition of their achievement on the AP Exams.

Charlotte Firestone ’09 is Maine’s female recipient of the 2009 State AP Scholar Award. The designation of AP Scholar is granted to the one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with grades of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams and then the highest average grade (at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken). Firestone also qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on 8 or more of these exams. Firestone took a total of 10 AP Exams during her high school career, averaging 4.6 on all exams.

In addition to Firestone, eleven other John Bapst students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Anna Carmack ’10, Ryan Casey ’09, Christopher Fogler ’09, Alex Gale ’09, Ashley Gale ’09, Lydia Horne ’09, Justin Jordan ’09, Ryan Lad ’09, Margaret Lammert ’09, Olivia Simone ’09, and Daniel Ward ’09.

Eight students also qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on 4 or more of these exams. These students are Amy Cheetham ’09, Sean Gilbert ’09, Shane Hass ’10, Lucas Hubbard ’10, Jordan Meyers ’09, Jordan Myerowitz ’10, Abigail Perkins ’09, and Ian Szydlo ’10.

Twenty-five students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing 3 or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. JOHN BAPST STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR EXCEPTIONAL ACADEMIC ABILITY

Bangor, Maine.....Three John Bapst Memorial High School seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest achievers on the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in each state. The three Semifinalists from John Bapst are: Anna Carmack, daughter of Adrienne and David Carmack of Veazie; Evelyn Fairman, daughter of Janet and Randall Fairman of Dixmont; and Lucas Hubbard, son of Marlene and Jon Hubbard of Holden.

Six John Bapst Memorial High School seniors have also been named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. They placed among the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the 2008 PSAT/NMSQT and are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. The six Commended Students are: Gillian Anderson, daughter of Susanna Anderson of Holden and David Anderson of Hermon; Patrick Hall, son of Lynn and Robert Krueger of Glenburn; Shane Hass, son of Susan Hass and Frank of Veazie; Melissa Hoksch, daughter of Constance and Steven Hoksch of Hampden; Ian Szydlo, son of Leslie and David Szydlo of Glenburn; and Sarah Wardell, daughter of Joni and Edward Wardell of Orland.

“Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, these young men and women represent some of the most academically talented students in our country.” NMSC is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955, specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Program. Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by the NMSC and approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions.

John Bapst Field Hockey Teams Wins Bronze

The John Bapst Field Hockey Team participated in the 2009 Maine State Games on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Deering High School in Portland. Eight teams from around the state participated in the tournament. The Crusaders finished in third place, earning the Bronze medal. We lost only one game to Bangor High School, the gold medal winner. It's shaping up to be a great season!

John Bapst Spring Track Teams Complete Successful Seasons

On Saturday, the John Bapst Girls team won their second straight state title in track and field. The boys team finished in fifth place.

The girls and boys teams had a total of 8 first place finishes:

Hockey Boosters Host Golf Tournament - August 15

The Hockey Boosters of John Bapst Memorial High School are holding their 4th annual Golf Tournament fundraiser on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Hidden Meadows Golf Course, Old Town. Shotgun start is at 8:00 a.m., rain or shine. Space is limited to first 20 teams registered.

The cost is $50.00 per player, and includes a cart and lunch. A team and hole can be sponsored for the discounted price of $275.00. Holes can be sponsored individually for $125.00 each. Proceeds from the tournament help cover the expenses for both the varsity and JV hockey teams for the upcoming 2009-2010 season.

2009 Honors Parts

John Bapst Memorial High School Head Mel MacKay has announced honor parts for the Class of 2009. This year's valedictorian is Margaret Ann Lammert and the salutatorian is Ashley Mae Gale.

Lammert has earned numerous academic letters and awards during her four years at John Bapst. She is a recipient of the 2009 MPA Principals' Award, the Society of Women Engineers Book Award, the Phi Beta Kappa Award, and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor Award. A Commended National Merit Scholar and high honor student, Lammert is president of the John Bapst National Honor Society, past secretary and current senior representative to the Key Club, captain of the Math Team, and a member of the Civil Rights Team and Student Ambassadors. In the athletic arena, she has lettered in three varsity sports during her high school career, including Girls' Soccer on which she served as team captain; Indoor Track and Field; and Spring Track and Field. She also plays with Blackbear United, a club soccer team. She has been named a Penobscot Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete. Her community service has included volunteering time with the Special Olympics, the Red Cross, the Ronald McDonald House, Race for the Cure, and UNICEF. In recognition of her achievements, she has been granted the Silver Award in Girl Scouts and the Timothy Award by St. John's Catholic Church. She will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall where she plans to major in Biochemistry. She is the daughter of Mary and Steve Lammert of Glenburn.

Gale has earned numerous academic letters and awards during her four years at John Bapst. A high honor student and recipient of the AP Scholar with Honor Award, Gale has also served in many leadership roles during her high school career. This year, she is secretary of the National Honor Society, co-secretary of the Student Environmental Action Club, captain of the Math Team, and a senior representative to the Key Club. In the athletic arena, she has lettered in two varsity sports. In Girls' Soccer, she has served as team captain, has been chosen Most Improved Player, has been given the Coach's Award, and was selected to the Class B PVC All-Stars Second Team. In Girls' Tennis, she was awarded an Honorable Mention as a junior and this year serves as team captain. She has been named a Penobscot Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete. Her community service has included volunteering time with the Special Olympics, the Red Cross, and UNICEF. She will be attending the University of Connecticut, where she plans to major in Biomedical Engineering. Gale is the daughter of Sharon and Timothy Gale of Glenburn.

Bapst Student to Study in Spain

Shane Hass '10 is the recipient of a scholarship to study in Spain during summer 2009. Spanish Teacher Elizabeth Hudson obtained the scholarship through her activities in the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Ms. Hudson has served on the board of the García Lorca Chapter of the AATSP for a number of years and was one of two teachers nationwide who received the scholarship at the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Convention held in Orlando last fall. The scholarship is from Eduespaña through the Embassy of Spain.

Hass will study at the International House of Madrid for three weeks starting in June. The scholarship includes room, board, tuition and a stipend for air travel. Hass will prepare for the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Exam and learn more about his host country. He is the son of Susan and Frank Hass of Veazie and is a student in Brenda LoPotro's Honors Spanish IV class this year.

In Girls' Basketball, Samantha Gormley '09 of Levant was named to the McDonald's Senior All-Star Team, the Big East Conference 1st Team, the Big East Senior All-Star Team, and the Eastern Maine Class B All- Tournament Team; Morgan Chasse '09 of Veazie was named to the McDonald's Senior All-Star Team, the Big East Conference Senior All-Star Team, the Big East Conference 2nd Team, and the Big East Conference All- Academic Team; Hillary Keith '09 of Glenburn was named to the Big East Senior All-Star Team; Samantha Maquillan '09 of Holden was named to the big East Senior All-Star Team and the Big East Conference All- Defense Team; and Taylor Edgecomb '11 of Dedham was the recipient of the Big East Conference Paul Soucy Spirit Award. The Girls' Basketball Team concluded their season as the Class B Eastern Maine Runner-up.

In Boys' Basketball, Ryan Carr '10 of Veazie was named to the Big East Conference All-Academic Team; Bill Wetherbee '10 of Veazie was named to the Big East Conference All-Defense Team; Stephen Kelly '09 of Milford was named to the Big East Conference Senior All-Star Team; and Tim Armistead '09 of Bangor was the recipient of the Big East Conference Paul Soucy Spirit Award.

In Indoor Track, Chris Fogler '09 of Orrington was named to the Penobscot Valley Conference Eastern Maine Indoor Track League All-Conference Team in the Long Jump, 200 M Run, and High Jump; Danielle LeClair '10 of Orrington was named to the PVC-Eastern Maine Indoor Track League All-Conference Team in the Shot Put; and Jennifer Daley '11 of Orrington was named to the PVC-Eastern Maine Indoor Track League All-Conference Team in the High Jump.

In Swimming, Tara Nitardy '09 of Old Town was named to the Penobscot Valley Conference 1st Team in the 100 Butterfly, the All-Academic Girls' Team, and the All-State Girls' Team in the 200M and the 500M Freestyle. Andrew Desrosiers '09 of Carmel was named to the Penobscot Valley Conference 1st Team in the 50 Freestyle and the Boys' All-Academic Team. In addition, Corey Isherwood '09 of Holden and Ian Grover '09 of Corinna were named to the All-Academic Boys' Team, and Phoebe Peckenham '09 and Sarah Peckenham '09 of Orland were named to the Girls' All-Academic Team.

In Wrestling, A.J. Snapp '09 of Castine, Fred Lear '10 of Bangor, and Justin Jordan '09 and Lawrence DiPietro'10 of Glenburn were named as Individual State Meet Qualifiers.

In Ice Hockey, Derek Duff '10 of Bradley was the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League Most Valuable Player and named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 1st Team; Casey Hull '09 of Surry was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 1st Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Nicholas Mitchell '09 of Veazie was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 2nd Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Tyler Fadrigon'09 of Bangor was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 2nd Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Andrew Casey '09 of Glenburn was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 3rd Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Chase Huckestein '09 of Veazie was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 3rd Team and East-West Senior All-Star Team; Doug Dieuveuil '09 of Veazie was named to the East-West Senior All-Star Team; and Joseph Pate '12 of Orrington was named the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League Rookie of the Year. In addition, Coach Gene Fadrigon was named the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League Coach of the Year.

The Varsity Cheerleading Team placed second in the Class B State Cheerleading Competition and qualified to attend the New England Spirit Competition for the second year in a row.
