			<description>&lt;p&gt;FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE&lt;br /&gt;PRESS RELEASE DATE: September 22, 2009&lt;br /&gt;CONTACT: Lynn Doughty, Director of Development at 207-947-0313 x 116 or ldoughty@johnbapst.org.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NEWS RELEASE&lt;br /&gt;JOHN BAPST STUDENTS NAMED AP SCHOLARS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bangor&amp;mdash; Forty-five students at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams, according to the College Board &amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Advanced Placement Program at John Bapst offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses and receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on AP exams. The school offers 13 AP courses in a wide variety of subject areas. In addition, a similar number of honors courses are offered. All students enrolled in an AP course at John Bapst are required to take the AP Exam. In 2009, 129 students took a total of 273 tests in 13 subject areas. Out of those 129 students, 45 have been named AP Scholars in recognition of their achievement on the AP Exams.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Charlotte Firestone &amp;rsquo;09 is Maine&amp;rsquo;s female recipient of the 2009 State AP Scholar Award. The designation of AP Scholar is granted to the one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with grades of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams and then the highest average grade (at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken). Firestone also qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on 8 or more of these exams. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest achievers on the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in each state. The three Semifinalists from John Bapst are: Anna Carmack, daughter of Adrienne and David Carmack of Veazie; Evelyn Fairman, daughter of Janet and Randall Fairman of Dixmont; and Lucas Hubbard, son of Marlene and Jon Hubbard of Holden.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Six John Bapst Memorial High School seniors have also been named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. &lt;p&gt;In Ice Hockey, Derek Duff '10 of Bradley was the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League Most Valuable Player and named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 1st Team; Casey Hull '09 of Surry was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 1st Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Nicholas Mitchell '09 of Veazie was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 2nd Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Tyler Fadrigon'09 of Bangor was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 2nd Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Andrew Casey '09 of Glenburn was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 3rd Team and the East-West Senior All-Star Team; Chase Huckestein '09 of Veazie was named to the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League 3rd Team and East-West Senior All-Star Team; Doug Dieuveuil '09 of Veazie was named to the East-West Senior All-Star Team; and Joseph Pate '12 of Orrington was named the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League Rookie of the Year.&amp;nbsp; In addition, Coach Gene Fadrigon was named the Eastern Maine Class B Hockey League Coach of the Year.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
