Firestone Named State Winner of Siemens Award for Advanced Placement

The Siemens Foundation and the College Board have announced that Charlotte Firestone ’09 of John Bapst Memorial High School is one of two state winners of the 2008-2009 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.  Selection for the award was based on exceptional performance in AP math and science.  In addition to the national recognition, Firestone will receive a $2,000 college scholarship from the Siemens Foundation.

A high honor student at John Bapst, Firestone has won numerous academic class awards during her high school career.  She is the Rennselaer Medal Award recipient, a National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalist, and an AP Scholar With Distinction.  She is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Purple Math Team, and Key Club.  An advanced figure skater who has taught skating to children and adults for the City of Bangor and the Skating Club of Maine, Firestone recently joined the John Bapst Indoor Track Team, competing on the 800 Relay Team and in the 1- and 2-mile events.  The daughter of Francine Cantor and Albert Firestone of Bangor, Firestone plans to study architecture after high school. 

The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement are given out annually with the goal of recognizing one male and one female student in all 50 states.  In her letter of congratulations to Firestone, Diane Tsukamaki, director of National Recognition and Scholarship Programs for the College Board, wrote, “The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement exemplify the strong partnership between the Siemens Foundation and the College Board to expand the pool of math, science, and technology talent that we will need for the continued growth of business and industry in the United States and globally.  Your initiative to enroll and excel in Advanced Placement courses indeed reflects your ability to be one of our nation’s future leaders in math and science and a role model for other students.”

The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement are also awarded to one teacher and one high school in every state each year.  John Bapst science teacher William LoPotro was the recipient of the 2006-07 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement, and John Bapst Memorial High School was the recipient of the 2007-08 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.

Winter Art Show - January 8, 2009

The John Bapst student artists will be presenting works from their first semester art classes on Thursday, Jan 8, 2009 in the John Bapst Auditorium from 6:30 - 8pm.  Over eighty students from Ms. Burns' first semester Drawing, Basic Design, Painting, Advanced Art, and AP Studio Art classes will be exhibiting over 250 drawings, paintings, and ceramic pieces.  The public is welcome and admission is free.

Winter Sports Notables

Congratulations to Bapst seniors John Frankland, Casey Hull, Tara Nitardy and Coach Bowen for reaching athletic milestones this season. 

John Frankland '09, a senior captain, achieved his 100th varsity win during a home wrestling match in January.  He is one of three Bapst wrestlers, including Jeff Sanford '08 and Joe Fernandez '08, who have achieved this milestone.

Casey Hull '09, a captain of the Hockey Team, scored his 100th point in December during the game against Lawrence High School.

Tara Nitardy '09, a captain of the Swim Team, set a John Bapst Girl's Record in the 100 meter breaststroke for a time of 1:12:20.  The Girls' Class B State qualifying time is 1:24:00.

Wrestling Coach Joe Bowen reached 100 career coaching wins during a meet in January.
