John Bapst Memorial High School seniors Charlotte Firestone of Bangor and Katherine Greenlaw of Orrington have been named semifinalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, Nathan Lesser of Orono, an early graduate of John Bapst, was also named a semifinalist in the program.
Charlotte Firestone earned academic letters and numerous academic awards including high honors during her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. The recipient of the Rennselaer Medal in her junior year, Charlotte was a member of the John Bapst National Honor Society, Math Team, and Key Club. She is spending the 2008-2009 school year in Missouri where she is continuing her studies and training to be a professional ice skater. She is the daughter of Francine Cantor and Albert Firestone.
Katherine Greenlaw is a Student Ambassador and a member of the Tai Chi Club, Art Club, and Student Environmental Action Club. She earned academic letters in her freshman and sophomore years and was granted the U.S. History Award. Katherine is the daughter of Karen and Daniel Greenlaw.
While at John Bapst, Nate Lesser earned academic letters, receiving high honors during his sophomore and junior years. A member of the National Honor Society, he received numerous academic awards and was a member of the school’s Math Team for which he was selected the Top Freshman by the Eastern Maine Math League. He also lettered in three varsity sports including cross-country, Nordic skiing, and track & field. In cross-country, he received the Running Ideal Award and was co-captain of the team his junior year. A gifted violinist, he was selected for the Most Valuable Player Award in both the Chamber Ensemble and the Spring Musical Pit Band; participated in the All State Music Festival for violin in three consecutive years; and was chosen as Concertmaster in his freshman and sophomore years. After being granted early graduation in his junior year at John Bapst, Nate graduated with honors in June 2008 and is currently a student at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio.

Thirty-six John Bapst Memorial High School students have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.
Owen Firestone ’08 of Bangor qualified as a National AP Scholar by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams.
Twelve students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams. The 12 Scholars were Maren Askins ’08 Bangor, Jacqueline Burke ’08 of Holden, Frederick Eyerer ’08 of Newburgh, Joseph Fernandez '08 of Holden, Charlotte Firestone ’09 of Bangor, Erin Flynn ’08 of Hancock, Elizabeth Kevit ’08 of Eddington, Nathan Lesser ’09 of Orono, Joseph Moore ’08 of Orrington, Brian Porter ’08 of Holden, and Carolyn Ryder ’08 of Levant.
In addition, nine students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams. Those students were Alex Gale ’09 of Glenburn, Ashley Gale ’09 of Glenburn, Justin Jordan’09 of Glenburn, Ryan Lad ’09 of Glenburn, Margaret Lammert ’09 of Glenburn, Jamie Lapierre ’08 or Miilford, Jordan Meyers ’09 of Eddington, Katherine Rydell ’08 of Glenburn, and Alexandra Settele '08 of Holden.
An additional 15 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing 3 or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. Those Scholars were Madeleine Bayleran-Brown ’09 of Blue Hill, James Brigham ’08 Bangor, Lyndsey Brozyna ’09 of Orrington, Ryan Casey ’09 of Veazie, Amy Cheetham ’09 of Monroe, Autumn Doughty ’08 of Veazie, Lydia Horne ’09 of Holden, Eve Jordan ’08 of Veazie, Alyssa McIntyre ’08 of Newburgh, Matthew Nelson ’08 Orrington, Kaili Quinn ’08 of Dedham, Olivia Simone ’09 of Veazie, Emmaline Varney ’08 of Bangor, Daniel Ward ’09 of Carmel, and Chelsea Zawadzki ’08 of Brewer.
The Advanced Placement Program at John Bapst Memorial High School offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses and receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on AP Exams. The school offers 15 AP courses in a wide variety of subject areas. In addition, a similar number of honors courses are offered. In 2007-08, approximately one-third of John Bapst’s students participated in the AP Program.
