Anna Carmack Recieves MPA Prinicipal's Award

ANNA CARMACK OF JOHN BAPST RECEIVES PRINCIPAL’S AWARD

Bangor, Maine...Anna Carmack, a senior from Veazie, is the John Bapst Memorial High School recipient of the 2010 MPA Principal’s Award.  The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.  

In announcing the award, Head of School Mel MacKay noted, “Anna is part of a distinguished senior class, and there are many worthy leaders among her peers.  But in terms both of academic achievement and citizenship, I am confident in saying that she merits this award, and I felt honored to submit her name to the MPA.”

A high honor student at John Bapst, Carmack has won numerous academic class awards, including several in AP and honors courses.  She is the recipient of the 2009 Princeton Book Award of Maine, the University of Maine Society of Women Engineers Award, the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, and the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award.  She has been recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and an AP Scholar With Distinction.  Earlier this year, Carmack was named one of two Maine recipients of the Siemens/College Board AP Award.  She is also a candidate for the Presidential Scholars Award.

At John Bapst, Carmack is a captain of the John Bapst Purple Math Team, president of the Key Club, and a member of the National Honor Society and Civil Rights Team.  In addition to her Key Club work, Carmack has volunteered her time as a John Bapst Student Ambassador, as an Eastern Maine Medical Center Student Volunteer Manager, as a Westgate Manor Alzheimer’s Unit One-on-One Volunteer, and as a Team Captain in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  In the athletic arena, she lettered in varsity girls soccer and is a Youth Soccer Referee with the Bangor Soccer Club.  The daughter of Adrienne and David Carmack of Veazie, she plans to continue her studies in biology and mathematics.

Carmack, the other award winners, and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon on April 3.  The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.  The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 140 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine’s school administrators.

John Bapst is a non-sectarian, independent, college-preparatory school that serves students in grades 9 through 12, the majority of whom are publicly supported.  Located in its original 1928 building in Bangor’s Broadway Historic District, the school welcomes students from over 40 communities.

Lights, Camera, Auction!

The 8th Annual John Bapst Auction will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010 in the school auditorium.  This year's theme is Lights, Camera, Auction!    Tickets to the event are $15 per person or $25 per couple.  The price of admission includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, dessert and coffee.  A cash bar will also be available.  Raffle tickets are being sold again this year for $50 per ticket.  Only 400 tickets will be sold.  Last year the winner of the raffle took home $6,000. Annual Swing Dance - November 20th

Come join us for the Annual Swing Dance on November 20th from 8-10 pm. Tickets are $5 per person, and all proceeds benefit the John Bapst Fine Arts Program.

Dance to the live music of:

• The Hampden Academy Jazz Band
• The Woody Woodman Band

Also, be sure to come early to take FREE swing dance lessons from 7-8pm, courtesy of Backdoor Dance Studios!

There will be a $50 cash prize given to the best High School beginner dancers.
