John Bapst Website Policy and Guidelines

Introduction and Purpose

The John Bapst website serves as a resource for John Bapst students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff, supporters, donors, and members of the general community, prospective students, and the international student community.  John Bapst publishes to the official website general information, information about the school, educational programs, extracurricular activities, school events, and student and staff achievements, and school publications. It is the central means of communication for school-related activities, events, notifications, and other information.

Responsibility for the content on the John Bapst website falls primarily upon the Director of Communications, who works with staff and faculty to provide updates content, and the website development company Rainstorm Consulting. The Director of Communications assists with the creation, publishing, maintenance and updating of John Bapst’s web pages.  Each department is responsible for reviewing content on a regular basis to ensure accuracy. Any user of the website may direct comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns with the Director of Communications.

Content changes should be sent to the Director of Communications as an attached Word document, with the url of the appropriate page clearly noted.

Website Calendars

John Bapst uses Google calendars which are maintained by their own departments.  Technical aspects of the calendars are maintained by John Bapst Technology Coordinators.

Weekend Events – Director of the International Program

John Bapst Master Calendar includes listings for Academics, Fine Arts, Athletics, and Weekend Events, aggregated from their individual web calendars.

Other event information

Alumni and fundraising events are listed on the main pages of their respective web sections.

Social Media

John Bapst participates in social media, posting announcements, events, articles of interest, and other relevant content.

Facebook

John Bapst utilizes Facebook as a means of reaching out to the community at large, and maintains several publically-viewable pages. Information included in John Bapst social media is subject to the same guidelines as publication of content on the John Bapst website.

John Bapst web pages or social media pages may not contain advertising for, or link to, commercial sites without advance approval by the Director of Development. Approval will be considered only if

  1. the purpose of the advertising or link is consistent with the School mission,
  2. the advertising or link is essential to the purpose of the site, and
  3. the advertising or link does not imply school endorsement of the product or service.

Accessibility

John Bapst endeavors to make its pages meet basic accessibility requirements set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act, intended to assure that School information and activities are accessible to all.

Copyright

Information found on the John Bapst website is subject to copyright law, and is considered the intellectual property of John Bapst, or named creators. Student work remains the intellectual property of the student creator.

Any articles excerpted from outside news sources will contain links to the original content post.

School-related Portals

The John Bapst website contains portals to Moodle, a Course Management System used by teachers and students, and PowerSchool, which is used by students, parents, and John Bapst staff for course registration, information, grade reporting, assignment fulfillment and reporting. Both of these sites are password-protected and require a login from the Technology Coordinator.

Except as permitted by law, written permission is required from the owner of copyrighted material (including graphics, video, audio, and text) before copyrighted information can be placed on the School website.

Publication of Student, Parent, and Staff Information

Maine law requires that schools obtain written approval from parents/guardians prior to publishing information about students. In order for student names, photographs and projects to be included on the public area of the John Bapst website there must be a release (Parent/Guardian Agreement to Publish Student Information) signed by the student’s parent or legal guardian on file.

John Bapst will not publish on the public areas of the site, or in any publicly released physical documents:

  • Student biographies
  • Email addresses
  • Home addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Parents’ names
  • Other information that could be used by unauthorized individuals

John Bapst may publish the following

  • Group and individual photographs of students, related to activities at John Bapst
  • Full names of students in connection with class rosters, honor rolls, awards received, and team/extracurricular activity participant lists.
    • Contact information for John Bapst faculty and staff, including professional email contact information and appropriate phone extensions at John Bapst.
    • Links and excerpts of stories about John Bapst students, alumni, faculty, and staff published in other media sources
      • Individual student or class work in publications or on the John Bapst website from time to time in accordance with established guidelines. Such work may include creative writing, research projects, student-written articles, artwork, music, performances, and audiovisual presentations. All student work published on the school’s website is subject to copyright and remains the intellectual property of its creator.

Parents who wish to post personal information on a home page announcement related to student activities or Booster Clubs may do so through the Director of Development, Director of Communication, or Athletic Director.

In the interest of ensuring the safety of all members of our extended community, the use and/or posting of personal information (such as home and/or cellphone numbers, home addresses and personal email addresses) is strongly discouraged. All information posted online, regardless of whether in a secure site or public site, HTML or pdf, can be accessed and will be cached by systems indefinitely.

Acceptable Use

John Bapst has adopted and enforces the standards set forth in these Website Policy and Guidelines for materials posted on the John Bapst website to the best of its ability. John Bapst does not assume any liability or responsibility for failure to enforce its acceptable use standards nor does it assume any responsibility or liability for content provided by others, including content provided by faculty, staff, and students on their own personal web pages or social media pages.
